♦ PEDESTRIAN KILLED DRIVER ARRESTED BY POLICE (P.A.) HASTINGS. September 25. A fatal accident occurred near the Tomoana Show Grounds last evening, a pedestrian being killed by a car. The victim was James Andrew Pollock, a boilermaker, of Napier, a married man. aged 38 years. Pollock was employed by Niven and Company at Napier and was engaged on a job at the Tomoana works. Shortly after 8.30 o’clock last evening he was walking along the highway near the Show Grounds, when he was struck by a car in which was a party of young men. Pollock was carried some distance. The car continued on, breaking down a length of fencing and running into a telegraph pole. Subsequently the police arrested the driver of the vehicle, Frank Robert Jamieson, of Ongaonga road, Waipukurau, a labourer, aged 19 years. He appeared before Justices of the Peace in the Magistrate’s Court this morning on a charge that, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor vehicle, causing the death of Pollock. He was remanded for two weeks, DEATH FROM KNIFE WOUND (F0.0.R.) REEFTON, Sept. 25. Joseph Gordon Bains, who was admitted on Saturday to Inangahua Hospital, Reefton, suffering from a knife wound in the stomach, died at 4 a.m. to-day. A married man, aged about 36, Bains was a mill hand, who lived at Hukarere. An inquest will be held at Reefton to-morrow before Mr W. B. Auld, J.P. (Coroner), and evidence of identification will be taken. An adjournment will be taken to allow further inquiry to be made. CYCLIST HURT Neil Rae, aged 14 years, of 64 MeFadden’s road, sustained concussion when his bicycle ran into a stationary motor-car at 9.50 o’clock last night. He was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition is satisfactory. ___________________
