NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR TOURNEY
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 25. The first games In the 1941 New Zealand amateur billiards championship were played to-day. The president of the Wellington Billiards .Association, Mr A. H. Eaton, welcomed the contestants. In the afternoon'game, V. Choat (Christchurch) beat W. McMillan (the Wellington champion), 667-351. Choat reached the first 100 with a 25 lead, which he further extended at 200. Thereafter he had the game in safe keeping; Breaks were not large, but consistent. They included: Choat 60, 42. 32. 35, 47. 46; McMillan, 49, 43. 33. R, Garrick (Auckland) beat A. E. Redmond (Wellington), 666-400, before a capacity house tomight. Garrick was playing • brilliantly. With some early breaks he obtained a definite lead; and was able to reverse the decision Redmond got over him last year. Redmond could make little headway against the play of Garrick, thpugh occasionally, ihe got them rolling nicely on hazard play. Garrick held a '2l lead at .the flrst 100, a 90 lead at 200, 152 at 300, 201 at 400, 206 at 500, and 266 at 666. Garrick’s average ; was 15, His best breaks were 114, 31, 78, 31, 98,-56, 40, Bedmend’s- best were 34, 33, 74, 37,
