CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS
“NO EMERGENCY . SERVICE”
MINISTER’S ASSURANCE
‘(P.R.) WELLINGTON, August 22. “There is no intention of asking the appeal boards to direct conscientious objectors whose appeals have been allowed, to perform alternative service with the Emergency Fire Service or with any other section of the Emergency Reserve Corps,” said the Minister. for National Service (the Hon. R. Semple) to-day. Mr Semple was commenting on the motion passed‘at the last meeting of the Christchurch Fire Board, supporting a protest by the executive committee of the Emergency Fire Service Scheme, against the drafting of conscientious objectors to the service.
“The regulations are at present being drafted and will be issued at an early date, dealing with the whole question of alternative service for conscientious objectors,” Mr Semple said.
