COMPLETE BLACKOUT
PREPARATIONS IN AUCKLAND
(P.A.) AUCKLAND. August 20. Stating that a complete’ black-out must how be arranged, the Mayor (Mr J. A. C. Allum), at a meeting of Emergency Precautions Scheme leadere m the Town Hall, said that any lighting that was permitted could be regarded only, as relief from a complete blackout during the time when an emergency does not exist. ■ ■ . “Arrangements must now be mane to prepare for a complete black-out dliring any period of emergency,., and as soon as the various sections are ready, a test will be made and finally complete tests will be carried out, said Mr Allum. “The object of the tests is, of course, to discover any weak spots and strengthen them. It is intended that during the specified tests all personnel involved shall man their posts so that the efficiency of the whole scheme shall be tested.” ’„ Mr Allum said that street lighting could now be eliminated in a few minutes to provide* for any emergency. A survey was being made of buildings available in the metropolitan area with a view to using them in the event oi a daylight emergency. The best shelters were reported to be steel-fram* ferro-concrete buildings.
