MARKETS QUIET BUT FIRM

DEALINGS RESTRICTED

Markets continued quiet but firm on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, and dealings were restricted to a few stocks. New Zealand Government, 4 per cent, stock, due 1955, advanced to '.£107. Buyers of Union Bank raised their bfds to £6 17s, but sellers were reticent. , Buyers of Felt and Textiles raised their bids to 43s 6d, no sellers offering. New Zealand Insurance were firmer with buyers at 65s 6d.' A late sale of British Tobacco on Tuesday was reported at the advanced price of 47s 6d—buyers yesterday offered 465, but sellers wanted 48s. Broken Hill Proprietary were firmer on buyers’ offers 42s 3d. Electrolytic Zinc, preference, rose to 55s 6d, and there were further buyers at 55s 3d. New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op., 4| per cent, stock, due 1950 and 1955, had Improved demand at £B2. , Silverton Tramway (ex div.) had business at 28s 9d, and late offers of 28s 6d met with no response. Wodlworths were firm at 17s 7d, market closing 17s 6d buyers, 17s 9d sellers.

Grey River were firmer on buyers’ offers 15s 3d.
