UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO
* BEQUEST OF £IO,OOO
(P.S.S.) ] DUNEDIN, August 19. The council of Otago University, at a meeting tltts afternoon, received notice that under the will of Mr JohnSidey £IO,OOO had been bequeathed to the University of Otago, subject to life interests which had now expired. The legacy had been paid in Government stock and local body debentures. The Chancellor of the University (Mr W. J. Morrell) said the bequest had now become due through the death of Mr John Sidey’s daughter, Mrs Adam, the last person to hold a life interest in the legacy. They had reason, Mr Morrell said, to be grateful to Mr John Sidey, and also to their late chancellor, Sir Thomas Sidey. whose word, they could, imagine, would have accounted for a great deal in the matter. It was a wise provision which stipulated that the legacy was for the general purposes of the university, he added.
