BARRICADES ON WHARVES

PROTECTION FOR OVERSEAS VESSELS Movable barricades are to be erected on No. 6 and No. 7 wharves and the Gladstone pier at Lyttelton. These three wharves, in addition to No. 3, are those used by overseas vessels discharging and loading. The chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (Mr, H. Holderness) reported to the board yesterday as follows: — “The police authorities have, on a number of occasions, approached the board’s officers with a view to barricading these wharves as was done in the case of No. 3 jetty. This has been impossible to carry out as the lay-out of the railway lines serving these berths prevents any barricades of a permanent nature being erected. “Since then the police authorities have suggested movable barricades and our engineer drew plans for same which have been approved by the police authorities and the Railways Department. The police authorities have also undertaken to operate the barricades. , ~ “As it has always been the boards policy to do everything in its power to protect its property and the vessels serving the port which carry the Empire’s vital supplies, I instructed the engineer to proceed with the work at an estimated cost of some £l5O. It is pointed out that under the ‘Protected Places Emergency Regulations, 1940,’ and ‘Defence Emergency Regulations, 1941,’ we could be called on to carry out this work, but naturally no compulsion is necessary.” The chairman’s action was approved.
