TURF GOSSIP

An Attractive Card , The Christchurch Hunt Club received very satisfactory nominations last evening for its annual steeplechase meeting at Riccarton on Saturday. The Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase, in line with similar events recently decided, has closed with two acceptors only, but in the next event, the Maiden Stakes, no fewer than 35 have been paid up for. As the result the club will drop ope day from its May meeting. This decision followed a. recommendation by Mr C. L. Orbell. ,Mr A. S Elworthy, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference said he was glad that Mr Orbell had brought the matter up. He thought 80 per cent, of the people would agree with the views he had expressed at the conference recently on the curtailment of racing in war time, and although he was a keen follower of the turf he felt he had acted in the right manner.
