MENINGITIS CASE

CHILD’S DEATH IN HOSPITAL (P.A.) AUCKLAND, June 21. When the 17-months-old daughter of Mr and Mrs Trevor N. Foote, Gunson street, Ponsonby, was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Wednesday evening, the medical staff diagnosed the case as one of spinal meningitis. The child died within four hours, this being the first death of this kind in Auckland since the mild epidemic was reported from the north some months ago. , The chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board (Mr Allan Moody) said today that everything possible was done to save the child’s life. The history of the case showed that the child had been suffering from bronchitis. A Health Department officer said today that meningitis cases occurred, which were not of the epidemic class. “People should not be scared because cases appear to be exactly the same as the epidemic variety,” he added.
