OBITUARY

MRS F. H. ANDREW The death has occurred of Mrs F. H. Andrew, wife of Mr William Jeffery Andrew, Wanganui East, and mother of Lieutenant-Colonel L. W. Andrew, V.C. Mrs Andrew, who was 72 years of age, was born in Westport, and was a daughter of Mr Hugh Neil, one of the first settlers in Gabriel’s Gully. Otago. She has lived at Westport, Christchurch, Auckland, and Russell. She took a great interest in Dr. Barnardo’s Homes and was awarded the medal for long service in the Young People’s League. . She was -an active member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, and had been secretary of the Wanganui branch of the union for 24 years. Her son, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew, officer commanding a battalion of the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, left Crete safely, and other sons are Warrant Officer J. Roger Andrew (Trentham), and Captain J. M. Andrew, Wellington Regiment. Three of Mrs Andrew’s daughters were teachers. Miss E. Andrew died in 1917, and other daughters are Mrs J. D. Campbell (Waverley), Mrs R. H. Hughes (Pahiatua), and Mrs Harry Belton (Lower Hutt). MRS L. GINN Mrs L. Ginn (Wanganui East) died recently in her ninety-first year. She was a niece of James Pascoe Falkner, one of the founders of Melbourne, and one of the first members of the Victorian Parliament. She. is survived by 10 children, 30 grandchildren, 38 greatgrandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. ENGAGEMENTS Mr and Mrs Meredith Dorreen, Shirley, announce the engagement of their only daughter, Alva Agnes, to Corporal Stuart Leigh (Dick) Hatch, 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, only son of Mr and Mrs R. V. Hatch, Bannister street, Masterton. The engagement is announced of Vera Mazel, fourth daughter of Mrs G. S. White and the late Mr G. M. Nelson, Penrose, Auckland, to Trevor Verden, fourth son of Mrs Green and the late Mr W. J. Green, Ashburton, WOMEN’S TEMPERANCE UNION SYDENHAM BRANCH “White Ribbon Day" was observed by members of the Sydenham branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union at their monthly meeting. The president, Mrs Woodward, read the scientific temperance fact, and the secretary reported on the district executive’s recent meeting and gave a reading on “The White Ribbon” movement, A song was sung by Mrs Weather-head. Members contributed to the fund to provide comforts for the Seamen’s Institute at Lyttelton.
