GERMAN THREAT TO CYPRUS
ISLAND PREPARES TO MEET INVASION AUSTRALIAN TROOPS AMONG DEFENDERS (Received June 6, 7 p.m.) NICOSIA (Cyprus), June 5. The towns and countryside of Cyprus have now assumed a military appearance. Australian and other troops are under the command of an English officer whose efficiency and excellent sense of strategy have earned the respect of all his troops. The Cypriotes are calm and know that the threat of invasion is real, but they realise the German difficulties are great. The "Cyprus Post” says: We must not cheat ourselves into believing the Germans will be deterred by the fierceness of the reception which awaits them, or that they are unwilling, to pay a high price for the capture of Cyprus, which would Be a strategical help for further operations against Suer and the Middle East generally.”
