EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS

—-♦ RANGIORA PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE The need for a greater effort on the part of the borough in the Dominion appeal for £1,000,000 was emphasised by speakers at a meeting of the Rangiora Patriotic Committee on Thursday evening,. Alter reports from the various sub-committees had , been received there was a long discussion on methods of raising further funds. The chairman (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided over a good attendance. The chairman and Mr G. A. McAlpine advocated weekly collections to raise money, holding that this method would ensure regular contributions to the fund, Mr W. C. Prosser said that many persons had made no contributions at all. The response to collections was not as successful as in the last war and he favoured direct taxation. A suggestion that householders be circularised asking for contributions before the end of June was made by Mr C. J. Smith. This - was supported by Mr L. M. Best, who, after further discussion, moved that it be a recommendation to the appeals committee that further funds be raised by an appeal by circulars and by some public function. , The treasurei (Mr J. M. Fraser) reported that £1902 9s 9d had so far been collected in the borough and county. The borough’s contribution was £707 3s 9d and the county’s £1195 6s. Local funds collected since the last statement totalled £157 4s 6d, and £IOB 15s 6d had been paid out. There was a balance in hand of £73 7s 3d, The chairman stated that of the distric zone quota of £10,500, £Bll6 had been raised.
