FIRE AT NELSON HOSPITAL

OUTBREAK OCCURS IN STOREROOMS (PA) NELSON. May 7. Fire damaged’a portion of the old wooden block at the Nelson Hospital this morning. The outbreak occurred in upstairs storerooms above the isolation block, which, was occupied by several patients. All patients in the isolation ward and Ward 4, adjoining it, were removed safely from the building In spite of a strong south-westerly wind the brigade made a good save, confining the fire to the eastern end of the building. Members of the fire section of the Emergency Precautions Scheme, in operation for the first time, gave valuable assistance. The main hospital was not threatened, but wards were filled with hoavy smoke. However, there was no confusion or alarm. The hospital staff used emergency fire-fighting equipment, which assisted in keeping the flames in check till the arrival of the brigade.
