The Minister for Public Works (the Hon, H T. Armstrong), who returned to Wellington last night, will return to Canterbury to see the floating of the dam caissons at Rangitata for the inlet for the Rangitata-Rakaia diversion scheme. The date has npt been arranged, but it will probably fall before the end of May. The Minister for National Service (the Hon. •R. Semple) returned to Wellington last night. The date of his next visit to the South Island is indefinite. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates has agreed to a request to accept nomination as the National Party’s candidate for the Kaipara seat at the General Election. ’ Mr J. J. McGuigan, who has been headmaster of the Geraldine District High School for the last five years, has been, appointed headmaster of the Te Aroha District High School. • The Rev. S. Robertson Orr. of the Presbyterian Church, Vancouver, returned from Australia by the Mariposa on Saturday and arrived in' Christchurch yesterday by air. He will return to Canada' on May 30. v ■ Mr H. H. Rodd, manager of the Commercial Bank, Christchurch, has been transferred to Brisbane, where he will. be taking over the management -of .the branch there. Mr Rodd came from Melbourne to the Commercial Bank at Christchurch six and a half years ago. He expects to leave .towards the end of, this month for Brisbane, accompanied by his wife and daughters. Mr Rodd’s successor is Mr Charles Sussems, at present attached to the visiting inspectors’ office, Melbourne. Mr Sussems opened the Qamaru branch in 1925 and from there tooij over the management of the Napier office for seven years before leaving for Melbourne. He was in charge of the Napier branch office during the earthquake. The Mayor of Christchurch, Private R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., will be entertained ata social by the Christchurch South branch of the Labour Party to-morrow evening, when a presentation will be made to kim. The Hpn. A. H. Nordmeyer, Minister for Health, will attend the gathering. Inspector H. Martin has resumed his duties at the Central Police Station after an absence of about three months, during which he was relieving as inspector at Invercargill, Nelson, and ■Grcymouth. • Sympathy with Mr G. H. Holford in his- illness resulting' from an accident in Auckland was expressed by the Canterbury Progress League’s executive last night., Mr G.' H. McLean, Christchurch District Railways Traffic Manager, will return to-night from a visit to,the West Coast on.departmental business. Captain G. R. Kingston and Captain R. D. King, of Timaru, who were with the Medical Corps of the New Zealand Forces in Greece, have, according to cabled advice received by Mrs Kingston and Mrs King, returned safely to Egypt. Both are fit and well. Mr G. Meikle, master of the dredge Te Whaka at Lyttelton, is on retiring leave before his retirement on superannuation from the service of the Lyttelton Harbour B6ard. Mr, ri. Sutherland, Junior pilot and berthing master, has been appointed acting-master of the dredge. ; , A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of Captain J. A. McAlpine, who has been killed in action, was adopted at-a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday, .Captain McAlpine was a son of a former chairman of the board, Mr W. K. McAlpine, and brother of a member of the board, Mr J. K. McAlpine. A similar resolution was carried at last evenings meeting of, the executive of the Canterbury Progress League.
