MOUNT PLEASANT GARDEN CLUB

The monthly meeting of the Mount Pleasant Garden Club was held at Mrs Shepheard’s home, St. Andrew’s Hill, Mrs W. de C. Hughes presiding over a good attendance of members. The monthly competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs H. Edgar with a Souvenir de Madame Boullet rose, Mrs Shepheard being second with a bronze chrysanthemum. The president presented. the prizes for the best bloom competition, Miss E. Smythe receiving first prize with 18 points. Miss Hood-Williams being second with 13 points, and Mrs Buxton and Mrs Hughes third equal with 12 points. Members arranged a fine display, of chrysanthemums, and an enlightening talk on herbaceous borders was given by Mr F. J. E. Jolly, who was thanked by Mrs Hughes. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Shepheard, Fleming, and Gill. Church Army Appeal.~An appeal is being made to Church of England members to support appeals for patriotic purposes, as the church is receiving finance from the National Patriotic Fund Board for carrying on work with the forces both in New Zealand and overseas. It is stated that a Church Army officer has written expressing appreciation for the facilities provided at the base camp in Egypt. It is also stated that .most satisfactory reports are constantly being received of the work in New Zealand. The Rev. H. L. R. Isherwood, Chaplain in the Northern Military District, describes the work of. the Church Army as being most efficiently carried out and highly appreciated by both officers and men.
