WELCOME CLUB’S FINANCES

Sir,—The information given at the meeting of. the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council on Wednesday about the finances of the Welcome Club suggests the question; is it not time that there should be made- public an audited and detailed balance-sheet of the club? The money has been contributed by the public, either directly or through the Provincial Patriotic Council, and it is only fair and reasonable that the public should know how the money has been spent.—Yours, etC ‘■ NEW ZEALANDER. May 1, 1941. [“The Welcome Club Is part of the affairs of the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council, and is not required to produce an audited balance-sheet, as all its receipts are subject to Gov r eminent audit,” stated Mr J. W. Niven, treasurer for the Welcome Club and • the Patriotic Council, when this letter was referred to him yesterday. M The difference between receipts and payments referred to at the meeting was due mainly to capital expenditure in fitting out the club rooms, and it represents a certain amount of value, which can be returned to the fund when the club closes down after the war,” he continued. "The correspondent mentioned that it was only fair and. reasonable that the public should know how the money is spent. Well, it is simply spent in the entertainment of troops, and it might be pointed out that all payments are sanctioned by the Provincial Patriotic Council, which controls the club’s finances.”]
