VICTORY MEMORIAL SCHOOL

which it was intended, at a cost of about £IO,OOO. It is said the attendance is falling oil. If so, I hope Synod ■at its next sitting will agree that the school be kept open and well filled, even if the fees have to be reduced. Surely‘ our sense of collective responsibility indicates that faith without works is dead, in that moral obligations far outweigh legal ones.— Yours, etc., ' ■ , INASMUCH. April 28, 1941. Sir,—With reference to >the Victory Memorial: School, which has been under- discussion in your paper these last few days, I should like to know why the Sisters of the Community of the Sacred Name cannot, teach at the Victory Memorial School as they do at St. Michael’s School, where the overhead expenses are made much less by their doing so? The diocese gives a larger grant to the Victory School but there they have to pay much higher salaries to the staff. If the Community cannot help because they have not the sisters to do so, should not young women be encouraged to join the Community, if it means so much less expense for the schools?’ Now that St. Matthew's vestry . has got the money wanted for the heaters, it is to be hoped the diocese will do all in its power to help keep a war memorial with the name “Victory” open, especially in such tragic days as we are in. It would not be good for the Church and the public if a war memorial, school named “Victory” closed during this war. Has the public been asked to subscribe? I am, sure many of the, original subscribers would do so, as well as returned soldiers and Church people. —Yours, etc., A CHURCHWOMAN. April 28, 1941. [Dean ■ Julius and “Prayer With ■ Works” may, if they wish, briefly . reply, after which this correspondence will be closed.—Ed., “The' "Press.”] .
