STOCK EXCHANGE BUSINESS

INCREASED TURNOVER

There was an increased turnover oh call yesterday, with the bulk of the dealings in industrials. ■ Price- levels were well maintained. Apart from, vestibule business, .the following transactions were recorded:— New Zealand Government 3 & per cent, stock, due 1#53r57, advanced lo £IOO 7s 6d and £IOO 10s, and more was wanted at £IOO 7s 6d. The 1949 . and 1949-52 stock had an improved demand. Southland* Frozen Meat shares dropped to 32s '3d. Grey Valley Collieries moved up to 6s, and late oners at that price failed to attract sellers. New Zealand Breweries were firm, with sellers and business at 32s 6d, buyers at 325. Buyers of Australian Consolidated Industries raised their bids to 41s 10d, no sellers offering. Booth. Macdonald (preference) were firm, with and business at 8s 6d, sellers at" 6s 9d. British Tobacco advanced to 47s bd. and more were .wanted at 47s od, Broken Hill 'Proprietary ware weaker, with dealings- at 43s 3d and 435, and further-sellers at 43s 3d, 'buyers at 42s 9d, Evans Atlas Flour, -which had been.off the sales list for a long time, changed hands at 255. Theft of Vacuum Cleaners.—Described as the ace salesman in the Dominion for a firm selling vacuum cleaners. James David Bell, a married man, pleaded guilty in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court yesterday to 31 charges of theft of vacuum cleaners Qn one charge accused was sentenced to a year’s reformative detention. On the remaining counts he was ordered to come ,up for sentence if called on ; within 12 months.—PA

LORNEVILLE (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, April 8. Fat ewes were cheaper by 4s a head at the double market at Lorneville to-day. Because of a small entry, wethers improved by Is fid compared with the rates ruling last week. There was a heavy yarding of fat cattle, and considering the size of the entry the sale was a sound one. , There was an extra large yarding or tat cattle, with a greater percentage than usual of fat bullocks. The majority ot these were of very good quality. Some heifers of excellent quality were also included, but cows were only medium to fair. Better quality sorts sold at about 10s to 15s a head lower Gian last week s rates Prime heavy bullocks made from £l2 5.s to £l3 15s, prime quality £ll to £ll 15s, handy-weights £lO 5s to £lO las, light-weights £9 to £9 10s; prime quality heifers £9 15s to £lO 10s. handy-weights £8 15s to £9 ss, light £7 to £8; medium quality cows £7 10s to £8 10s, unfinished £5 10s to £6 10s, inferior £2 10s to £3 10s. There was a fairly full yarding of fat sheep, consisting almost wholly of ewes of quite good quality. Wethers were m short supply. Freezing operators were inactive, but there was competition from speculators. Ewes were cheaper by 4s, while wethers, because of the small entry, were firmer by Is fid. Extra prime young ewes made to 11s fid, good quality 8s fid to 9s fid, medium 7s to Bs. unfinished. 5s fid to 6s fid. good quality wethers 26s to 27s fid, medium 21s to 225. There was only a small yarding of fat lambs, the bulk of which was secured by export buyers at rates quite in keeping with the schedule.

TEMUKA (P.S.S.) TIMARU, April 8. The medium-sized entry of fat cattle at the Temuka sale, with the exception of a few pens, was of indifferent quality. Prime sorts met with a spirited demand, and values improved fully 10s a head on late rates. Other grades were firm. Prime steers made from £l2 17s fid to £ls 12s fid, light to medium £9 17s fid to £ll 12s fid; prime heifers £lO 2s fid to £l2 12s fid, light to medium £8 12s 6d to £9 17s 6d; prime cows to £9 2s fid, medium £5 7s fid to £6 12s fid. The penning in the fat sheep section was smaller than usual, and the quality generally was below average standard. The demand was the keenest for some time, and rates were 2s a head better than last sale. Prime wethers made from 28g» to 31s Id, medium 24s Id to 26s 4d: prime ewes 15s Id to 16s lOd. light to medium 10s to 14s 4d, Only a few pens were forward in the store sheep section. A small line of good two-tooth Romney ewes realised 355, and medium crossbred ewe lambs 17s lOd; f.m. crossbred ewes, 5s to fis lid. BURNSIDE (P.A,) DUNEDIN, April 8. The fat cattle section at the Burnside sale comprised a small entry of 218 head. The quality of the stock forward was not up to the usual standard. The price for all prime cattle was on a par with last week’s sale, with the exception of cows and heifers, which "showed a decline of 15s a head. Extra prime bullocks made to £l9 2s fid, prime from £l4 7s fid to £l6 17s fid, light from £0 12s fid: prime heavy cows and heifers to £ls 2s fid, prime from £0 12s fid to £lO 17s fid, medium and light from £6 2s fid. A small entry pf 100 head of store cattle was penned. Only one pen of store bullocks was yarded. The vealer entry was a fairly large one, with a few quality vealers forward. Prices for all grades were on a par with last sale. A small yarding of 20 dairy cows was forward, prices being on a par with recent sales. A medium entry ot 1505 fat sheep was forward. The bulk of the penning was of medium quality ewes, with a sprinkling of prime wethers and ewes. The price for prime wethers was on a par with the last sale, while all other classes met with a decline of from Is fid to 2s fid a head. Best wethers made to 30s, prime from 24s to 27s fid, medium from 20s to 22s fid, light, from 17s. Best ewes made to IBs, prime from 10s fid to 13s, medium from 7s fid.

In the fat lamb section an entry of 975 was penned. The quality of the yarding was'not good. The sale was a free one throughout, with prices up to full schedule rates. Best lambs made to 30s, prime lambs from 23s fid to 265, medium lambs 20s fid to 225, light from 18s. There was a medium yarding of 132 fat pigs, mostly porkers. The sale was on a par with last week’s rates, best baconers making to £5 4s. Porkers sold from £2 10s to £3 12s. A small yarding of store pigs met with a firmer sale than last week, making to 10s.
