WOMEN IN THE NAVY

. AUSTRALIAN AUXILIARIES

(F.0.0.C.) SYDNEY, April 1. The Navy Department for the first time in its history is to enlist women within the Royal Australian Navy. The organisation will function on similar lines to that in Britain. The Royal Australian Air Force has already women in its service. The women will be used only for shore duties. The first call. will be for women signallers, but girls .will be enlisted later in other snore branches to release more men for active service.

The organiser of the Women’s Emergency Signallers’ Corps, Mr F. V. McKenzie, said the Navy was the first of the fighting services to approach the corps for qualified women telegraphists, and 50 expert operators were set j aside for naval service. They will be’ available immediately the Navy calls them up. It is expected that the Army will also enlist girls soon for instructional purposes, for duty at permanent signal stations. The Women’s Emergency Signallers’ Corps was formed six months before the outbreak of the war. Hundreds of women and girls are undergoing training.
