COPRA FOR PIGS
— ♦ — FIRST SHIPMENT BEING DISTRIBUTED (P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 8. Copra for feeding pigs is now being distributed from New Plymouth. It comprises roughly one-third of the first shipment—about 500 tons—which has been brought to New Zealand for the purpose. The remainder is to be stored at,a convenient centre by the Internal Marketing Department, which is supervising the distribution. The decision to import copra -was made when a shortage of grains from Australia threatened to interfere seriously with the production of baconer pigs, at that time keenly sought by the United Kingdom Government. Though restrictions on baconers have since been imposed, farmers will still require some form of supplementary fodder. Other shipments are to be made for other pig raising'districts. The Pacific islands have lost, almost the whole overseas market for copra because of the war, and exports to New Zealand will be of great importance to them.
Stores for Hospital Ship —When the hospital ship Maunganui sails she, will take with her hospital stores and comforts provided by the joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society, which has been responsible for looking after the sick, wounded, and distressed as the agent in this sphere of patriotic service, of the National Patriotic Fund Board, These stores will supplement the army medical service supplies.— PA,
