Calls to Fire Brigade—Three calls were answered by the Christchurch Fire Brigade yesterday—one to the Provincial Council Chambers, caused by a defective automatic alarm, one to a fire in a washhouse, and the third to the Hereford Court building, where a short-circuit occurred in the lift motor. No damage was done at Hereford Court, and the brigade returned after cutting off the electric power. The washhouse fire was at 18 Rotherham street, Riccarton, on a property occupied by Mrs M. R. Batten and owned by Mr A? E. Marriott. The brigade was called just before 8 a.m. The detached washhouse was badly damaged, but the fire was brought under control before it could do serious damage to the house. Embers which fell to the floor from the copper fire were the cause of the outbreak.
