TURAKINA PRAISED FOR FIGHT
The recent gallant fight put up by the Turakina against an enemy raider was referred to by the chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board (Mr W, J. A. McGregor) at the meeting of the board last week. Mr McGregor expressed pride in the captain, officers, and crew of the Turakina. Captain Laird, who was well known in Southland, had fought for two and a half hours with one gun against the raider. In the ordinary course of life the men of the Turakina were peaceful seamen, he said, so it was evident that they came of good old British stock. The board passed a motion of appreciation of the action of Captain Laird and his crew in putting up such a gallant fight against the raider.
