NORTH CANTERBURY

£1,000,000 APPEAL

TOTAL REACHES £3912 IN NORTH CANTERBURY

Since the end of November, £3912 has been collected in the No. 2 North Canterbury Patriotic ■ Zone for the Do-minion-wide £1,000,000 appeal. The zone extends from the Hurunui river to the Waimakariri river, and the amount allocated to it in the appeal was £ 10.302.

Although few of the patriotic committees have been very active since Christmas, a big effort to raise more funds will be made in the next month or two. In many of the country districts, where harvesting is under way, the various committees are not able to make immediate efforts and will resume their activities next month. Waipara County has made the largest contribution so far, and its total is now less than £SOO below the £IBOO allocated to it. A progress report on the collections in the various countries in the zone was given on Saturday by Ihe secretary (Mr A. C. Fraser). The amounts collected to date, with the quotas shown in parenthesis, are:— Waipara county, £1350 (£1800); Kowai county, £SOO (£1300); Ashley county, £2OO (£500); Rangiora county, £6BO (£2100); Rangiora borough, £360 (£150.0); Oxford county, £352 (£1100); Eyre county, £420 (£1200). HOME GUARD ELLESMERE ENROLMENTS Keen interest in parades and lectures is being shown by members of the various Home Guard units in the tfilesmere district. In spite of wet weather, 51 out of a total strength of 53 attended the last parade at Leeston. Afterwards lectures were given in the schoolroom by the group commander, Lieutenant W. S. McLaughlin, and Dr. S. R, Cattell. The approximate enlistments in the district are as follows:—Dunsandel 65, Southbridge 50, Leeston 53, BrooksideIrweU 33, Lakeside 8, Killinchy 1. The numbers are steadily growing. RANGIORA DEFENCE CLUB The fifth competition shoot of the Rangiora Defence Rifle Club was held on Saturday afternoon. The conditions were 10 shots at 300 yards and 10 at 500 yards. The scores were;— • J. Turner, 300 yards 46, 500 yards 49, handicap 1, total 96; C, Humphreys, 46, 41, 3—90; L. Jones, 40, 40, 10—90; R. Bowman. 43, 46, scr—B9; C. Butters, 42, 46, 1—89; T. Thompson, 42, 43, 1—86; R. Palmer., 41. 33, 12—86.

LEESTON BUILDING BY-LAWS

The opinion was expressed at the monthly meeting of the Leeston Town Board that certain sections of the building by-laws were too stringent and were hampering building progress in the town district. The section referred to in particular was the one relating to a brick area. Notice of an amending motion to be moved at the next meeting was given. The chairman (Cmr. A. S. Lyons) reported on the recent conference of local body representatives with the North Canterbury Hospital Board about its rebuilding and extension programme. On the whole, said the chairman, the delegates were satisfied with what they had seen and heard.

The fees for the registration of dogs were fixed, also the date for the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty on outstanding rates. ,
