TROTTING NOTES

A Popular Club The popularity of trotting in the Methven district is well illustrated in the nominations received for the annual meeting on October 5. for no fewer than 221 entries have been received for eight events. For the Westward Ho Handicap. 3min asee?" class. 46 nominations have been received, and 44 are engaged in the Mount Harding Handicap. 3min Isec class. The big fields may present some difficulties for the club, and the programme may have to be prolonged by twodivision races. The majority engaged in the Westward Ho Handicap are maiden performers, and will start from the limit, but the Trotting Conference has decreed that the safety number of the course at the mile and a quarter post is 12 horses, and allowing for three over this number there will have to be a big weeding out to obviate the necessity of running the race in divisions. The same applies to the Mount Harding Handicap, with a nomination of 44.

A Crack Three-year-old In his last three starts, Special Force has met the best three-year-olds in New Zealand, and in each case he has proved his marked superiority. His win at Hull Park on Saturday was decisive, but it will be the last chance for him in a three-year-old classic, for ho was not nominated for the New Brighton Stakes nor the New Zealand Derby. This is -unfortunate for his connexions, but will be appreciated by owners of other three-year-olds. In the Wellington Stakes on Saturday Special Force did not begin very smartly, and Walter Moore was early in front from Salisbury, Shadow Maid, and there was no alteration at the six furlongs post, where Special Force was going well in fourth place. At the end of a mile, run in 2min 19 l-ssec, Special Force ran up handy to Walter Moore, and the pair drew away from Shadow Maid, while Gold Chief moved up to fourth. The two came into the final stretch together, but at the distance Special Force had the measure of Walter Moore and went on to win well from Shadow Maid, who made a solid effort. The rest were well beaten.

A Muddling Pace At Hutt Park on Saturday, the Wilford Memorial was run at a crawl for a mile and a half, with Cruiser, driven by F. Holmes, as pacemaker. Ferry Post made a sharp move round the field from the half-mile, but failed to reach Cruiser, who was admirably suited by the slow pace. Accountant, hemmed in most of the way, was a moderate third, and the unplaced horses had every chance, but could not go on at the finish. The first mile took 2min 30scc.

Not Up to Expectations After Walter Moore’s fine showing in the Timaru Stakes last year, he gave every promise of developing into a crack three-year-old, but his subsequent form has not been so impressive. He was beaten into third place in the New Zealand Derby and on Saturday could get only fourth, behind Special Force, Shadow Maid, and Gold Chief. The last-named, after a hard race in the stakes,, was again produced in the Trial Handicap, and was narrowly defeated by Ardglass.
