PARENTS’ UNION
ADDRESS BY MR A. E. CADDICK At the monthly meeting of the Parents’ National Educational Union, held last 'night at the home of Mr and Mrs George Weston, Park terrace, the speaker was Mr A. E. Caddick. who gave an enjoyable address on Dickens, dealing principally with the reforming aspect of his work. "Just now, when times are out of joint and London is the centre of the news, it is pleasant to renew acquaintance with Dickens, who. though born at Portsea, was a Londoner at heart—so much so that he has been described as ‘a little Cockney bounder’," said Mr Caddick. Dickens, he continued, was an English Victorian Liberal, with a big heart and a tremendous sympathy with the under-dog. In his novels, he attacked such abuses as imprisonment for debt, bad schools, the law’s delay, ignorant and venal nursing, industrial abuses, officialdom, gambling, wild cat companies, and disregard for the spirit of humanity. He achieved a great measure of success as a reformer, and his success was due largely to his humour, which, like all true humour, was often touched by pathos. To emphasise his points, Mr Caddick read several passages from Dickens’s works. Mr Weston thanked the speaker for the pleasure he , had given members. Mrs Douglas Anderson presided at the meeting, and Mrs Weston enterlained all present at supper.
