SUCCESSFUL GATHERING AT ST. MATTHEW’S

‘‘ln these sad and anxious days, when people are giving so generously of their time and energy and money for war work, it is pleasant and praiseworthy to find that Church work is not being retarded,” said Mrs George Gould, in officially opening St. Matthew’s Flower Show and Fair, held in the parish hall yesterday afternoon and last night. Mrs Gould added that the attractive array of flowers displayed at the show proved that many were finding in their gardens happy relief trom strain and stress. In declaring the fair open she wished the stall-holders the success they deserved. The vicar, the Rev. W. E, D. Davies, who was accompanied by Mrs Davies, introduced Mrs Gould, who was presented with a bouquet of hyacinths and pansies. Mr Davies said the fair, which was arranged in aid of parish funds, was the first of many annual events to be held in the parish. The idea of a flower show originated with St. Matthew's Guild, artd was furthered by Mrs W. B. Gracie and Miss C. Reeves. The committee, he said, had had the benefit of the experienced help of the Rev. and Mrs W. H. Orbell and it was also indebted to Mrs Alan J. Wagner (Miss Feaver). to Mr A. W. Pitt, headmaster of the Victory School, who organised the children’s section, to Mr H. A. Jarden and to all stall-holders, judges, committee, and all helpers who had co-operated happily to ensure the success of the fair. The stalls and stall-holders were as follows; Miscellaneous: Misses B. and L. Smith, and members of the choir. Needlework: Miss C. Reeves and helpers. Toys; Mesdames Williams and T. Penny. Sweets; Mrs H. H. Fountain and Bible Class girls. Produce: Mr A C Murray’ and helpers. Delicatessen: Mr F. Dodds and heloers. Plants;. Mrs G. G. Grover and helpers. Cakes: Mrs W. B. Gracie" and helpers. Afternoon tea; Mothers’ Union. In the evening Mr and Mrs Davies presented the prizes won at the show, for which there were in all sections more than 850 entries. The following were the winners:—Daffodil section; Mr Knight, Mr Penlington (three prizes). Mrs Foote, Miss Soanes. Cut flower section: Mrs Hewland (two prizes). Lady Acland. Miss Lane. Mr Penlington. Mrs Woodford, Mrs Mallard Mrs Coulter. Decorative seqtion; Miss de la Mere (two prizes), Mrs Quartermain, Mrs N. McGregor, Miss Thomson, Mrs Aynsley, Mrs Grover. Cookery; Mesdames Conn, Sutton. Lloyd, Boyce (two prizes) Coulter, Mahan Pearcy, King, Aynsley (two). Miss Winny. Mrs East, Mrs Hawker. Needlework (60 entries); Miss R Fogarty. Miss R. Wear, and Miss D. Gracie (equal), Mrs Pegler. Mrs A. Gibson, Miss K. Few, Mrs Miles (two), Miss King, Mrs Smith, Miss Wharton, Mrs Mason. Vegetables: Mrs Bennetts, Lady Acland, Mrs Rundle. Children’s section: Ross Hawker. Cotton, Ivan Fraser Roger Warr (2). Raines Bloxam, Thelma Dodd (3), Barbara Pearcy, Barbara Stubbs, Joy Davies, Audrey Long, Valmai Vale. Roger A. Pitt, Eric Warr. Special challenge cup, given by Mrs A. J. Wagner for most points in decorative section: Miss de la Mere. Challenge cup given by the vicar for most points in all sections: Mr Penlington.

After Inspecting the new premises of the Welcome Club yesterday afternoon, representatives of women’s organisations in the city were entertained by the committee of the club at afternoon tea in the large dining-room. The clubrooms will be open to the public next Thursday,
