The Minister for Finance (the Hon. W. Nash), who will be in Christchurch for the week-end, will attend the Christchurch Welcome Club tonight and will speak at 6.30, before the dub is opened for the use of men of the armed forces. Mr Nash will preach at the Avonside Church to-morrow night and will be in Christchurch on Monday to receive deputations. He will return to .Wellington on Monday night. Mr M. G. Somerville, of the South British Insurance Company, Ltd., who has been transferred to Timaru as manager, was presented by the Christchurch staff with a silver tea service. The presentation was made by Mr N. C. Barstow, Christchurch manager. Opportunity was also taken to welcome Mr Somerville's successor, Mr N. Speary, formerly of the Wellington branch.
The Very Rev. Dr. A. J. Mcßae, chancellor of the archdiocese of Wellington, has been raised to the rank of a Domestic Prelate, which carries with it the title of Rt, Rev. Monsignor, He is a brother of Mr D. Mcßae, of Timaru, and Sergeant C. Mcßae, of the Christchurch Police Force. Monsignor Mcßae, after completing his studies, went to Washington for four years and then returned to St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle street, Wellington, as curate. Later he was appointed administrator and chancellor of the archdiocese. . ■ *
Messrs C. Morgan Williams, M.P., and W. A, Bodkin, M.P., arrived from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. The Chief Electrical Engineer in the Public Works Department (Mr F. T. M. Kissel) was a passenger from Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning. The divisional commander for Canterbury and Westland in the Salvation Army (Brigadier C. Gray) returned from a conference in Wellington by the steamer express yesterday morning.
