SUB-ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL MEETING

Because of the outbreak of war, all clubs were handicapped by the loss of players, while the restrictions on petrol had caused some difficulty in the arrangement of transport, stated the repo *: presented at the forty-seventh annual meeting of the North Canterbury Cricket Sub-Association in Rangiora last evening. The president (Mr J. W. Stanton) presided. The season had been successful in spite of the difficulties, the report continued. Eight teams tpok part in the senior competition, which was won by the Loburn Club, and five in the second grade competition, won by the Rangiora High School for the third time in succession. The year’s working showed a small debit balance of 2s Bd, but as receipts amounting to £1 10s 6d are outstanding, the new season will start with a small credit, it v/as reported. The following officers were elected: —Patrons, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, M.P., and Messrs H. A. Bennett, and C. Morgan Williams; president, Mr J. W. Stanton: vice-presidents, Messrs A,. P. Strang, A. R. Kinley, A. L. Lochheart, W. A. Virtue, C. B. Bourne, and Lieutenant-Colonel F K. Kippenberger, and presidents of the affiliated clubs; auditor, Mr S. G. Dailey; secretary, Mr G. M. Morgan; assistant secretary, Mr A. L. Lockhearl; selectors, senior. Mr A. P. Smith; junior. Mr W. Steel; executive, Messrs A. P. Smith, A. L. Lockheart, D. Hoskin, R. Bennett, T. A. Prior, H. Sail, and B. Eder; postponement committee, president and Mr H. R. Little; delegates to Canterbury Association, president and secretary. It was decided to hold a senior and junior competition. Delegates reported that Kaiapoi and Woodend clubs would each enter one team in the senior competition, and subject to confirmation, the Rangiora Club would enter two teams. Loburn, Fernside, Carleton, and Eyreton clubs would each enter one team in the junior competition. It was decided that two-day matches be played in the senior competition and one-day matches in the, junior competition.

RANGIORA NOTES

WEEK-END SPORTS

There will be few sports fixtures in the Rangiora district to-day as most of the winter sports have been concluded and a start has not yet been made with summer sports. Members of the Rangjora Golf Club will play a combined stroke handicap, A’hilc the women’s section has an open day. A team from the club will play. Amberley, at Amberley, to-morrow. 'Badminton Match A team from the Young Women's Christian Association, Christchurch, played a friendly competition in Rangiora on Thursday evening with members of St. John’s Anglican Badminton Club. The visitors won by 8 games to 4.

PERSONAL NOTES

RANGIORA Mr J. Mitchell, superintendent of the John Knox Presbyterian Sunday school, Rangiora. for many years, was presented with a book at the annual congregational meeting of the church on Thursday evening, when his resignation was received with regret. Making the presentation, the session clerk (Mr C. I. Jennings) said that Mr Mitchell had been connected with Sunday school work for more than 50 years. Mrs Dash and Miss Elizabeth Dash (Dunedin) have returned to their home after paying a short visit to Rangiora.

AKAROA CENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS

PRESENTATIONS TO MAYOR AND TOWN CLERK The valuable work done in connexion with the Akaroa centennial celebrations by Mr E. R. E. Davs, Mayor of Akaroa, and chairman of the Centennial Committee, and Mr P. G. Riches, Town Clerk and secretary, was recognised at a meeting of the committee on Wednesday night. The mayor, m presenting Mr Riches with a fire screen and coal box of beaten copper; referred to Mr and Mrs Riches’s four years of unremitting v/ork in preparation for the celebrations. Mr Riches, in reply, spoke of the harmonious manner in which the committee made the arrangements. The Deputy Mayor, Mr R. Bruce, presented Mr Davis with a ;rystal decanter set and said the members of the committee wished to recognise Mr and Mrs Davis’s unremitting attention in the preparation and carrying through of the centennial celebrations functions. In reply, Mr Davis said the great success of the celebrations had been the reward for anything he and Mrs Davis had done. He thanked the committee members for their enthusiasm and support and for the handsome gift. Dr. W. J. Edginton also spoke of Archdeacon Petrie’s departure shortly from Akaroa. As a member of the committee, he said, Mr Petrie had been untiring in his efforts. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser), wrote acknowledging the committee’s appreciation of the Government’s assistance at the celebrations and t{ranking the committee for their wonderful co-operation which had made the celebrations such a signal success. A committee consisting of Messrs F. Davis. R. Bruce, Dr. W. J. Edginton and W. Jacobson was set up, with power to act for the production of a brochure. AKAROA DOMAIN TENNIS CLUB ■ Mr A. J. Smith presided, at the annual meeting of the Akaroa Domain Tennis Club, when there was a good attendance of members. Thursday, October 3, was fixed for opening day. All members on active service were made financial members for the duration of the war.

The following officers were elected: —President, Mr F. R. E. Davis; vicepresidents, Mrs A. E. Rhodes, Mr A. R. Haylock, and the Rev. Father P. O’Meeghan; club captain, Mr W. White; vicecaptain. Mr T. Jordan; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. C. M. Reid; auditor, Mr S. C. Naismith; committee, Mesdames W. Pool, T. Jordan, Misses S. Brown, D. Pool, P. Brocherie, Messrs W. White, D. C. M. Reid, T. Jordan, and E. H. Giddens: delegates to Banks Peninsula Association, Messrs D. Reid and W. White.
