WAR EFFORT BY CHILDREN
BIG SUM COLLECTED IN CANTERBURY
School children in Canterbury have done their part in the general effort to secure funds for war purposes. It was reported to the Canterbury Education Board yesterday that the amount collected up to September 18 aggregated £3791 17s 7d; £3,410 8s 2d of this was subscribed by public schools and £3Bl 9s 5d by private schools. There remained four schools yet to remit their contributions. This practically ended the magnificent effort. “We set out to raise £2500. That amount has been exceeded by no less a sum than £1292. The money has been raised voluntarily, quickly, quietly, and without any beating of drums or blare of trumpets, just as humanitarian offerings should always be. We are grateful to the headmasters, sole, and assistant teachers who have dope so much by impressing upon the young mind its obligation to its country and Empire. If, as the result of the work of this ambulance, only a few lives are saved and only a few wounds are soothed and assuaged, the effort will have been well worth while and the children will be richly repaid for their self-sacrifice.”
