LINEN FLAX
• ♦ SOWING COMMENCED IN ASHBURTON COUNTY
A start has been made with the sowing of linen flax in the Ashburton county. The warmer soil in areas in the Rakaia district has been planted, and the work will be continued throughout October in the colder areas near the foothills. Altogether, about 1300 acres of flax will be sown. Experiments conducted in Mid-Can-terbury over the last three years have shown that linen flax'reaches maturity about four months from sowing. It is expected that crops should be ready for harvesting from January of next year. Tenders are being called by the Department of Agriculture in an advertisement appearing in this issue of “The Press” for the pulling of the crop. Machines for the work are now being made in Christchurch, and contractors will be supplied with them.
Tennis Players should make a point of seeing the great range of Tennis Rackets on view at the Canterbury Sports Depot, 113 Cashel street, at prices from 25s to 95s each. They should specially note that all the rackets are strung with Imported gut, without any Increase in price. Besides Rackets, Nets. Balls, Covers. Eyeshades, etc., are stocked. Everything is priced most reasonably, and the quality is right. Inspection is Invited and welcomed. —6
