POINTS FROM OTHER LETTERS
“Artist” commends the suggestion for the appointment of an official war artist. The writer suggests that men who have already shown their desire to serve their country by enlisting as soon as the call for men was made should not be overlooked. A very promising artist is at present with the forces in Egypt, and no doubt others are serving abroad the different war zones.
On the decrease in the birth-rate ‘ A to Z” writes: “The voice of ‘Catholic Mother’ is as a voice in the wilderness. The solution is in the home. When we have a Christian State that will carry out its true functions of protecting the home from evils within the realm, from unjust interference, and particularly safeguard family rights, such as that of private property and the living wage then it can be said that we possess statesmen who realise that the ‘welfare of the home is the welfare of the nation.’ ”
“The Woman in the Street’ writes: “I did not refer in my previous letter to large families generally being mentally or physically unfit, only to those of which either one parent or both were deficient in mind mostly. The defect had been in the family many years. I have known it in several different districts all over New Zealand, and there was no interference with nature, as ‘Catholic Mother’ suggests. They did not know anything of birth control and some of them wished they had. ... I may say that Christchurch has made itself the laughing stock of New Zealand with these constant attacks on women. It is a pity they have not some manly work to attend to instead of advertising their clubs.”
“Booza” writes: “Would you publish a ruling on the meaning of a local magistrate, who said ‘that one could appreciate a lounge service, hut this kind of business, with bar open, will not be tolerated.’ Does this mean that there is to be drinking after hours so long as one is in the lounge? If this is so, ‘the carpenters are certainly going to have a busy time converting all available space ja hotels.* 4
