SUPPLEMENTARY ESTIMATES

Total of £1,388,312 In Extra Votes PROVISION FOR WOMEN POLICE [Froha Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON. July 31. Supplementary. Estimates, providing for the expenditure (additional to the main Estimates already approved) of £1,388,312, were introduced into the House of Representatives to-day. The amount ol the extra votes sought are: finance, £2830; general administration, £.21,009; law and order, £7598; development of primary and secondary industries, £ 1a,927; Post Office Account, £8953; Slate Fire Insurance Account, £5000; Fruit Industry Account, £728; Broadcasting Account, £11,562; Public Works Department, £155; railway construction, £200,000; railway improvements and additions to openlines, £82,050; public buildings, £22525; lighthouses and harbour works, £2320; roads, £70,000; irrigation, water supply and drainage, £102,500; swamp and land drainage, £2000; linen flax development, £430,000. An additional grant of £250,000 for the Main Highways Account is also provided. The sum of £2500 is provided under stamp .duties, for additional refund of totalisator duty on race meetings lor patriotic purposes. The sum of £IBB9 is required for one of,three meetings already held, and the additional amount, it is explained, will be necessary to cover refunds on the other two meetings, ahd oh any further meetings which may be held. Provision is made for the payment of £124, the amount of a draft drawn by the Italian Consul on Rome before the outbreak of war. The amount is recoverable/ A subsidy of £BOO is provided for the Chatham Islands shipping service as payment for the subsidy for porlion of a year, for which an annual subsidy of- £I2OO is to be paid, of which £3OO is to be found by the- Post and Telegraph Department. The cost of opening up and examining the steamer Tees cost the Marine Department £250. The grant for the provision of housing for agricultural native workers on market gardens in the Pukekohe district is £20,000. Ntttiimal Service Vote A new vote in the Estimates is that of £101.440 for the recently established National' Service Department. The Director of National Service Is to receiv'd a salary of £IOSO, and the staff will comprise 70, whose salaries range from £63 to £335. Salaries, expenses and allowances to appeal boards set up under the regulations are expected to cost £19,910. All the administration expenses, travelling expenses, and allowances of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary are set down at £2995. A grant, of £SOO to meet the travelling expenses and daily allowances of-the members of the Aliens Control Tribunal is made, while for the Department of Justice and Prisons an additional £IO2O for rations is provided, for the extension of. the butter ration to include all inmates of the institutions, and for a new ration for fresh fruit. ‘ The sum of £3OO 2S provided to increase the tobacco ration to cover all' inmates. An outbreak of a serious nature south of Auckland necessitates the provision of an additional- £IOOO for charges incidental to the diseases ot livestock. Present indications, it is explained, are that the outbreak has been dealt with successfully. Expansion of activities at Lincoln and Massey Colleges has caused a sum of £6OOO additional to the £27.000 provided in the main Estimates for the New Zealand School of Agriculture. ■ The explanation for the additional vote of £BOO lor the expenses of members of the Council of Primary Production is that it was expected that a reduction of the council s activities would be effected; but national war needs had since necessitated that these activities be intensified. The sum of £I4OO is provided for women police. , , Expenditure m connexion with salvage operations on the steamer Port Bowen and. the disposal of mateiials, is expected to absorb £IO,OOO. which is recoverable. . , . ■ The subsidy to the sugar industry is provided for by a grant of £63,000, which is also recoverable. Specific grants to the Christchurch and Wanganui Karitane Hospitals towards the cost of building extensions at those institutions will cost an additional £2OOO, in a grant m aid to the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children. The carriage of mails by the transpacific air service is expected to cost £SOOO. An additional vote of £203.000 for railway construction provided.
