RANGIORA NOTES WHEAT TRIALS Excellent strikes are reported of the high-quality trial wheat sown recently in the North Canterbury district by the Department of Agriculture. New types of wheat, imported and bred by the Wheat Research Institute. are being tried out in test plots in the Hawarden, Amberley, and Omihi areas. The department is also making fertiliser trials in the Ashley district, where superphosphate, reverted superphosphate, and silicosuperphosphate have been drilled with wheat at the rate of one hundredweight and two hundredweight to the acre. These plots will be compared with areas sown without manure. Presbyterian Church Social A congregational social held by the John Knox Presbyterian Church, Rangiora, on Tuesday evening was well attended by members and their friends, the Rev. J. M. Bates presiding. A number of items were given, community singing was led by Mr C. J. Keir, games were played, and dancing was enjoyed to music provided by Mrs H. L. Spark and Miss J. Forgeson. The programme was contributed by Miss Forgeson’s pupils (dances), Mrs H. B. Clark, Miss E. Mayfield, and Mr Keir (songs), Mr J. D. Galloway (Scotch reading) Mesdames C. Campbell and V J. Corbett and Mr H. M. Denton (sketches). The function was arranged by the ladies’ guild. Secondary Schools’ Sports About 70 pupils of Papanui Technical College will visit Rangiora on Monday to play return sports matches with Rangiora High School. The party, which will arrive in Rangiora by the midday train, will comprise two football teams, four basketball teams, and two hockey teams. The visitors will return to Christchurch in the evening. SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANGIORA BEATS ST. BEDE’S COLLEGE TEAM Playing a fast, open game, the Rangiora High School first fifteen beat St, Bede’s College second fifteen -by 19 points to 8, in the annual match at Rangiora yesterday. The W fairly closely contested for there was a difference of 11 in the final scores, both teams obtained two tries. Nine of Rangiora s points came from penalties. N. Boyce (Rangiora) was in excellent kicking form. This player also converted two The Rangiora backs featured in several brisk movements in the first halt, J. Fleming making some particularly good openings. Rangiora was leading 8 to 0 at half-time. In the second half play was open. St. Bede s made a quick retaliation at the start, J. EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS SCHEME PROVINCIAL ORGANISATION SUGGESTED A letter from the Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, regarding the organising of emergency precautions in the borough, was received at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council. The letter advised that the department considered it necessary for the council to take steps to' set up an emergency precautions organisation on the lines set out in the guide book. After discussion. it was decided to write to the department suggesting that {o obviate overlapping and duplication of organisations, a provincial committee be set up of representatives from the various local bodies concerned to formulate ,a scheme for the whole province. In reply to correspondence from the council regarding the formation of a territorial unit in Kaiapoi,. the Minister for Defence, Wellington, wrote advising that after inquiries it had been found that it would not be practicable to give effect to the proposal, KAIAPOI BOWLING CLUB The president, Mr W. Hart, presided at the thirty-seventh annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Bowling Club. The election of officers resulted:—President, Mr W. Hart; vice-presidents, Messrs J. R. Murphy and L. B. Wounded, and Distress Fund amounted to £IBO 10s 6d, ; reported the secretary at a meeting of the club. Remits for . the annual meeting of the New Zealand Gun Clubs’ Association, to be held m Christchurch on Tuesday, the opening day of the Dominion trap-shooting championships, were considered.
