NO CHARGE FOR PUBLICITY

♦ BROADCASTING SERVICE AND PATRIOTIC APPEAL 9 WELLINGTON, July 30. “Is it a fact that the commercial broadcasting service makes a charge for those organisations requesting publicity for patriotic purposes?” asked Mr W. A. Bodkin (Opposition. Central Otago) during the debate on the broadcasting estimates in the House to-night. “No,” was the Prime Minister’s reply. Mr Bodkin said the report was that £SOO was charged in Wellington for a recent appeal by the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross. If that charge was made, the Government should see that it was refunded. The Prime Minister replied that the commercial service was a business concern, and there was no complaint if it had made charges as the newspapers did. He did not know the terms the newspapers charged for space for the appeal; but he assumed that they dealt with it in a most generous manner. The whole.- of the broadcasting service was placed at the disposal of the fund. In two nights £SOOO was raised in Wellington and £32.000. in Auckland. Everybody connected with the appeal deserved credit. •
