IMPORTS OF BALING WIRE

♦ WELLINGTON, July 30. A request that in the interests of modern methods of labour saving, and the prevention of waste in primary production, the Minister for Customs (the Hon. W. Nash) should reconsider his department’s refusal to issue import licences for baling wire from Australia was contained in an urgent question asked by Mr T. D. Burnett (Opposition. Temuka) in the House of Representatives to-day. In a note to his question Mr Burnett said that recently the Customs refused licences to import wire by. Christchurch and Ashburton firms. “The point raised is answered in the main by the fact that there are licences nut for well over 1000 tons of baling wire,” the Minister replied,. He said that at the moment the commodity was not obtainable in the quantities required. Arrangements were made during the recent visit to Australia of the Minister for Supply (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) to expedite deliveries as far as possible, and every ton that could be obtained in the ordinary way was being obtained, in some cases through manufacturers’ agents, and in others through wholesalers. .
