STEEL SUPPLIES

— ♦ — EFFORTS TO EXPEDITE DELIVERY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON. July 30. A statement that everything possible had been done to expedite delivery of supplies of steel was made by the Minister for Customs (the Hon. W. Nash) in a reply in the House of Representatives to-day to an urgent question asked by Mr J, A. Lee (Democratic' Labour, Grey Lynn) on behalf of the Cpeaker (the' Hon. W. E. Barnard, Democratic Labour, Napier). A statement had been sought by Mr Barnard explaining the position in regard to the importation of steel for Government buildings and other public structures, buildings for local bodies, and br’Mings for private individuals. Mr Nash said that the Minister for Supoly (the Hon. D. G. Sullivan) had made arrangements with the Australian authorities for preference to be given to steel urgently required for essential needs. For other steel licences had been issued in the ordinary way to agents of steel manufacturers in Australia. The only way he could suggest for exoediting delivery was for those who had' nlaced orders to make further representations. Everything possible had been done by making representations to the manufacturers of steel and to the Federal Government to giv° maximum preference to orders from New Zealand.
