CARRIAGE OF LIME
POSSIBLE EXTENSION OF SUBSIDY [From Our Parliamentary Reporter.! WELLINGTON, July 23. The hope, that it would be possible to extend the benefit of the subsidy for the carriage of lime to people living long distances from the railway was expressed by the Acting-Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. F. Langstone) during consideration of the estimates of the Department of Agriculture in the House of Representatives to-day. The point was raised by Mr W. J. Broadfoot (Opposition, Waitomo), who pointed out that lime for farmers was carried free on the railways for thg first 100 miles.
“The subsidy for the carriage of lime is all'very well for farmers living near a railway line,” said Mr Broadfoot. “Is any provision to be made for people well back on marginal land?" Mr Langstone: That is dealt with in the report of the Agricultural Lime Investigation Committee. Mr Broadfoot; Will the recommendation be given effect to? Mr Langstone: I hope so. Mr Broadfoot: So do I. Later in the discussion Mr Langstone said that the report of the committee was also ready for presentation to Parliament. “I want to see that not only those on the railway, but those some distance away have some benefit from the State subsidy for the carriage of lime-,” said the Minister.
