MOTOR REGISTRATION PLATES
j, * NEED FOR ANNUAL CHARGE QUESTIONED [From Ouy Parliamentary Reportei.l WELLINGTON, July 23. The necessity for a change of motor registration plates every year, specially during the war period, was questioned by the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui) and by the Leader of the Opposition (the Hon. A. Hamilton) during consideration of the estimates of the post office account in the House of Representatives to•night. Reference 'was made by Mr' Forbes to the vote of £20,000 for car number plates. He said he could see no reason for a change of plates every year.
Mr Hamilton said that the annual plates could probably be justified from the police point of view. He understood that in some countries a sticker was considered sufficient by the police for identification purposes. His garage was full of old number plates. The Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser); You can give them back for waste.
“We have made inquiries, and all the evidence indicates that the present system is most efficient,” said the Postmaster-General (the Hon. P. C. Webb), “but in view of the war, the whole matter will be reconsidered before next year."
