IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY
OFFICERS WORKING IN ANOTHER DEPARTMENT
[From Our Parliamentary Reporter.]
WELLINGTON, July 23,
“For certain reasons, the industry cannot be gone on with because of the war, and the officers are now working for the Industries and Commerce Department, and the consequence is that this amount will not be expended at all,” said the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) in the House of Representatives to-day, in reply to questions on the estimates for the iron and steel industry account. "What are they doing?” asked the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui), referring to the estimate providing lor £IO,OOO. “We know that nothing is being done in the account. The provision voted last year was £225,000, and there is a credit in aid of £3OBO, although the industry has not been started,”
The Prime Minister: The mysteries of finance are unlimited.
The explanation that the officers were now working for another department was made when Mr Forbes asked why salaries of £4357 were to be paid.
