Captain Lord Dormer, aide-de-camp to the Governor-General (Lord Galway) arrived from the north by the steamer express yesterday morning. Mr W. Selby, accompanied by Mrs Selby, returned to Christchurch yesterday. They flew from Sydney in the flying-boat Awarua. The New Zealand Student Christian Movement has received advice that the Rev. Robert C. Mackie, general secretary of the World’s Student Christian Federation, who was previously reported missing, is now in Geneva, and hopes to leave this week for America—Press Association.
The Christchurch Drainage Board last evening passed a resolution of sympathy with a former member, Mr W. R. Carey, in the loss, during an Air Force action, of his son, Flying Officer G. W. F. Carey, D.F.C. Cabled advice was received in Christchurch yesterday that Pilot Officer C. E. Malfroy, the New Zealand Davis Gup tennis player and onetime singles champion of New Zealand, has been appointed to train pilots in England. Pilot Officer Malfroy has been on active service since the outbreak of war, and a few months ago, in a “dog fight” with the enemy, he shared in a bag of seven Heinkels and Dormers that fell in Belgium to a British squadron from the West of England.
The Christchurch Drainage Board last evening granted leave of absence for four months to a member, Mr C. Hill, because of ill-health. Mr Hill will go to Australia.
