RUGBY FOOTBAAL

SOUTH CANTERBURY

RESENTFUL

REPLY TO CRITICISM

, ‘‘Some of the remarks made at the last meeting were rather unkind,” said the president of the Canterbury Rugby Union (Mr J. K. Moloney), when tne management committee of the union received last evening a letter from the South Canterbury Union replying to criticism of its refusal to play home-and-away matches with Canterbury this season. The letter set out the straitened financial situation of the southern union in the following terms:

“When the matter of the return match was discussed at last night’s meeting of the management committee it was felt that some members of your union did not appreciate this union’s present financial difficulties, nor the arrangements which have previously existed between our unions as to the playing of representative fixtures. In the first place it should be pointed out that in our eight playing Saturdays to date our gate takings have averaged £8 3s 6d a Saturday, out of which we are to pay all expenses, including 10 per cent, to the New Zealand Union.

“Further, in an endeavour to assist in the war effort, it being thought the winning of the war was of first importance, we have advanced to the Government for the duration of the war and fer six months thereafter £IOO free of interest out of our touring .fund. You will follow from this that our resources have become depleted to such an extent that it would be unwise to make any arrangements regarding travelling at this juncture. “Second, the arrangements of touring which exist between our unions are apparently not known to some of your members, and it would be advisable to point cut that South Canterbury representatives travelled to Christchurch last season and that the match between our provinces is due this season to be played at Timaru. and home and home matches were suggested in your letter. "We repeat that in ordinary circumstances we would be delighted to oblige your union by a return game, but with a bank balance of approximately £2O and liabilities of approximately £4O on current account, no such arrangement appears possible at present, but should the financial position improve we shall be only too pleased favourably to consider your request.’’ Mr Moloney said the South Canterbury Union was undoubtedly “up against it.” He had received a letter from a member of the South Canterbury Union, and it was obvious that the latter resented the remarks of some of the Canterbury Union members when discussing the matter. “These remarks did not look so good in print although they did net sound very bad at the meeting,” said Mr Moloney. “We are fortunate in having hundreds of footballers in the camps around Christchurch and we are actually having an extraordinary season. We have a duty to keep the game going and to help a less fortunate union where possible.” There was no further discussion.
