HELPING MILITARY AUTHORITIES

TO THE EDITOR OF THE PRESS. Sir,—l suppose one should congratulate these “four retired businessmen” who went round to the barracks and are now on the voluntary staff as reported in your paper this morning. But when one sees the number of eligible clerks either out of work or on parttime work, one wonders if their efforts are in the best interests of the community. I am perfectly certain that

there are men in this city who would jump at the opportunity of being a temporary, paid clerk in preference to drawing 35s a week sustenance. Of course it may be that these retired men are not aware that there are unemployed men in this city, but a visit to 193 Hereford street would soon show there is still unemployment, in spite of the Hon. P. Webb’s statement that there are two jobs for every man.— Yours, etc., LIVE AND LET LIVE. July 23, 1940.
