Mrs L. H. Pritchett (Riccarton) is spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs. To honour Miss Chrissie Swan, whose marriage to Mr R. D. Glackin will take place next week, Mrs A. J. Sandorn, jun., was hostess at a “variety” gift party held at her home. The guests were Mesdames A. P. Mac Duff, Roy Lane, E. Schnack, D. S. Turner, Misses Chrissie Swan. Nira Glackin, Muriel Clark. Vonnie Flood, Rosaleen McKendry, Kathleen Palmer, Pat. Judd, and Eileen Turner. . Miss Betty Wright (Kaiapbi), whose marriage will take place on Tuesday, was entertained at a “cream and green” kitchen party given by Mrs Kane and Miss Pearl Philpot. Other hostesses for Miss Wright have included Mrs W. H Ede (“Holmthwaite,” Kimberley), who held a “variety” party at Beath’s, and Miss Rae Templeton, who was hostess at a luncheon party held at Ballantynes. Mrs Tristram Willcox has returned from a broadcasting tour of Auckland and Wellington. The prefects of the Avonside Girls’ High School entertained monitors of the Christchurch Boys’ High School at a dance held recently. The senior monitor, F. B. Smith, was master ot ceremonies. The guests of honour were Miss M. Samuel. Mrs B. Boyd, Miss G. Caradus, and Miss J. Morice. Bergh (Sheffield), has left to relieve the matron, Karitane Hospital, Invercargill. Mrs H. Worrall (“Te Marahau,” Mount Pleasant) entertained,members of the Mount Pleasant sub-centre of the Red Cross at an afternoon party. Musical items were given by Mrs W. E. Olds and her concert party, and an amusing competition was held. The sum of £8 was raised for the Red Cross Miss Ethne Tosswill advises her customers that Miss G. Warren, Fendalton, is now the guest of Mrs Victor Mulligan, “Cracroft,” Mayfield At the Red Cross Shop, which was under the charge of the Merivale subcentre of the Red Cross Society yesterday, the sum of £846 was taken up to the time of the closing of the shop last night. Of this sum £690 was taken at the shop. Raffles which are still open will be drawn, some on Monday and some on July 10, when a further sum should be added to this total. The net proceeds of the Repertory Society’s presentation of “Dear Octopus” on Monday night will also be added to the fund. Mrs Norton Francis (president) presided at the monthly meeting of the Parents’ National Educational Union, held yesterday •at the home of Mrs Douglas Anderson, Armagh street west. The speaker was Miss Lillian Jeffreys, who described life in Syria, dealing particularly with the lot of women. She showed an interesting collection of articles in common household use in Syria, and a typical Syrian woman’s dress, veil, and shoes. Mrs J. G. Hawkins thanked Miss Jeffreys for her address. Members were entertained at tea by Mrs Anderson and Mrs Reg. Vincent. The marriage will take place in Wellington to-day of Mr John Pascoe, of Christchurch, the well-known mountaineer, and Miss Dorothy Harding, of Wellington. At the June meeting of the North Christchurch Garden Club, held at the home of Mrs C. S. Thompson (Fitzgerald street),. Mrs E. L. King gave a demonstration of floral work. In addition to formal and informal bowls, and a presentation box of flowers, she showed members how to arrange a “sand saucer.” The blooms were sold later, and proceeds given to the Red Cross.
