PRODUCE AND GRAIN

POTATO MARKET STILL QUIET The decision of the Federal Government to allow the sale of 5000 tons of New Zealand potatoes on the Australian market this year has had no strengthening effect on prices to growers, yesterday’s quotations still being at the low level of £2 10s to £2 15s, prices which show little return to the farmer for his work. The maximum price of £4 10s f.o.b. fixed by the order issued this week, is equivalent to about £3 to farmers. Most merchants arc still of the opinion that the export of the 5000 tons, which is to begin next month, will make little difference to the market, since reports from growers indicate record yields, and, consequently, a very substantial surplus, probably several times greater than the amount which Australia has decided to take. Merchants have not yet been informed of the arrangements the Government is making for marketing the potatoes. Other markets are quiet at unchanged prices. Quotations The following quotations to farmers on trucks at country sidings, unless otherwise indicated, are supplied by the president of the North Canterbury Grain, Seed, and Produce Merchants’ Association. Linseed, f.a.q., £25. i ASHBURTON The seasonal quietnesS has been in evidence on the Ashburton market during the week, there being no particular activity in any department of the grain, seed, or produce markets. Milling wheat has now been cleared up and there are odd sales of fowl wheat taking place. Occasional orders for seed wheat are being received, but it is anticipated that there will be a strong spring demand. - . Garton oats suitable for seed or milling purposes are in demand. Cowgrass is saleable at recent quotations, and small lines are still coming forward. Ryegrass and cocksfoot are firm at recent quotations. Most lines of partridge peas suitable for export have been dealt with, and supplies of second grade are not plentiful. The North Island is inquiring for potatoes lor forward delivery, but the prices offering are not sufficiently attractive to enable business to be transacted; Oatsheaf chaff is firm at late rates. The following are prices quoted to farmers, on trucks at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:— Wheat—Milling, f.0.b.. Tuscan 5s 9d, Hunters 5s lid.
