OTAGO FARMERS MEET “In view of the great necessity for the export of pig meat to Great Britain we should seriously consider a reduction of our home consumption of pork and bacon for the duration of the war, and thereby increase the amount that could be exported.” This was the form of a remit passed at the annual meeting of the Five Forks branch, and received at the monthly meeting of the North Otago branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union yesterday. A further remit passed at the monthly meeting of the Five Forks branch, proposing a linen flax industry, was received vesterdav. The remit read: ; “In the interests of the farmers of I North Otago, who like all primary pro- ; ducers-, are determined to do their utmost towards the war effort, we would' ‘ appreciate an immediate inquiry into ■ the possibilities of growing linen flax i in this part of the South Island.” BOROUGH RATE CONFIRMED , ; SPECIAL MEETING OF ' ‘ COUNCIL The striking of the rate for the current financial year was confirmed at a special meeting of the Oamaru Borough Council on Thursday night. The details of the rate are as follows: General, 2s in the £; special. Is; hospital, sd; and water at the maximum uniform rate (approximately ls>, making a total of 4s 6d in the £. The rate is the same as last year. The borough valuation is £128,127.
