ADDINGTON MARKET

All-Round Better Sale FURTHER IMPROVEMENT IN EWE VALUES This week’s Addington sale was held yesterday instead of to-day on account of Anzac Day falling on Thursday. As a rule any change in the old-established sale date meets with an erratic market, but such was not the case yesterday. The tone was the best for a considerable time. There has been a welcome response to growth as a result of the rains of the last three weeks, and this resulted in a much more spirited competition for breeding ewes than for some weeks. Fine wool ewes, particularly sound and failing mouthed, sold freely at a further advance on the improved rates of last week. Forward lambs were also firmer. Fat sheep improved for practically all classes, particularly for prime and medium wethers and export ewes, for which there was a much wider demand. A smaller entry of fat cattle improved prices for the better classes.

STORE SHEEP The sale of fine wool ewes was the best since the early part of the ewe fair season. There was a smaller entry in the store section, comprising about 6000 head in the section, as against 8000 last week. The improved feed position as a result of the rain was the main factor in the recovery, and there were cases of ewes for which 9s could have been secured only with difficulty a month ago making up to 14s yesterday. Last week’s market recorded a turn in ewe values and the movement was continued to-day by from 2s to 3s for fine woolled sorts. Farmers who had been waiting for an improvement in the feed position came freely into the market for the older sheep, of which there was a complete clearance. There was little change in the value of coarse-woolled ewes. A truck lot of Chatham two-tooths sold at 30s, two, four, six, and eight-tooth Chatham ewes, mostly the older ages, made 26s 6d. a medium line of two-tcoths 25s 6d. There were not many fine-wool ewes in the entry. One two-tooth truck lot. mated with Romney rams, made 24s 3d. and another pen, mated similarly, 20s 6d. Four-year halfbred ewes from the Kaikoura district sold at from 12s 3d to 12s 4d, with failingmouthed at 7s 4d. A few pens of wethers were offered, the best—a medium lot of two-tooths —selling at 15s lid, with other pens at 15s. 13s 3d, and 13s 9d, culls at 8s 5d to 9s 6d. Onlv nine pens of lambs were offered, and these sold for all but the inferior sorts from 2s to 3s a head better than thev did a week ago Forward rape lambs made to 19s 3d. medium to 16s 6d. ordinary to 13s 6d, and rough from 5s 7d. FAT LAMBS With the advance of the season the lamb yarding was the smallest for some time, totalling under 800 head, as against 1200 last week. Quality was poor all round, and with the marked scarcity of butchers’ sorts, this class again sold firmly to a shade better, in some cases up to Is over schedule being paid. Freezing buyers were actively in the market, all •firms operating at schedule. Generally the sale was better than that of last week. H. Matson and Company sold:—On account of Mrs E. J. Stalker (Greenpark). 3 at 33s lOd: North Canterbury client, 6 at 25s 7d to 28s Id: A. H. Busch (Amberlev), 5 at 26s 4d to 28s Id: J. H. Lord (Kowai Bush), 20 at 16s 4d to 205 4d ‘ FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry comprised about 'SOOO head, compared with 5500 to 6000 last week. The usual small proportion of prime wethers was again apparent. The sale in the early stages showed a minor, hardening on the improved rates of last week, but firmed before the sale was long in progress. Practically all classes appreciated. Prime wethers and ewes were better than a week ago, by Is to Is 6d a head, and the scarcity of these caused a firmer demand by butchers for .medium sorts. These were dearer by Is 6d to <js. There was wider competition from exporters for freezing ewes and these were better than last week’s rates by Is or more a head, the schedule level being reached for a fair proportion. The demand continued firm until the finish, and there were practically no passings. Amongst the best sales was a line of 204 ewes from R. D. Robinson (Ashburton), which averaged 245. and another of 20 from H. J. M. Williams (Ellesmere), which

sold at 26s 7d to 29s 7d. An outstanding lot of 18 wethers from F. L. Schaffer (Springston) sold at 32s 7d to 35s lOd, a pen of 10 at the top figure. FAT CATTLE The entry was within reasonable distance of the week’s requirements, comprising 430 head as against 460 last week, and averages of about 650 at sales immediately preceding. Quality, moreover, was better, not by the number, of outstanding cattle, but by a much bigger proportion of fairly well-finished steers. There were also more prime cows forward. For all the improved sorts there was a freer demand, with an appreciation for the better- classes of 10s to 15s a head. Where quality appealed butchers competed actively. Good beef ■maAe tcQtsv Sfis to 37s 6d per 1001b, with a few pens of tops a shade more, whilst medium ranged from 33s to 355. and rough down to 26s per 1001b. Included in a prime ‘draft from J. E. VEALEKS There was an average penning in the vealer section, both in numbers and quality. The penning included a station line of 15 from the back country, but odd lots comprised the remainder. The market showed little change. The station line ranged from £3 to £4 Is for the best and from £2 5s to £2 15s for the remainder. Values were:— Best runners to £6 18s 6d. Good runners, £5 to £6 ss. Medium runners, 42s 6d to £3 2s 6d. Good vealers, to £3. Medium vealers, 35s to 555. Ordinary vealers, to 32s 6d. Large calves, 20s to 30s. Small calves, 8s to 19s. STORE CATTLE A small entry in the store pens included two pens of three-year steers and a pen of station cows. The good condition of the better pen of steers evoked brisk competition, and the nine in the pen sold at £9 Is, and the second pen of 13 at £7 8s 6d. There was a small attendance of buyers, but apart from these lines there was little interest in the sale. DAIRY COWS The penning of dairy cattle was about the same size as that of a week ago. There was nothing outstanding in the penning, but good sorts of heifers were in demand, making from £ll to £l3 ss, others from £8 10s to £0 10s, and ordinary down to £5. Better classes of cows were also competed for briskly, a few of the best making from £ll to a shade more. FAT PIGS The entry of porkers was again on the small side, and in the early stages appearances were that butchers’ requirements would be impossible to fill. Later arrivals, however, increased the entry, but values showed little change on those of last week. Baconers were forward in medium supply, but the sale was scarcely as good as that of a week ago. Prime . light and medium weights showed very little change, but heavy and heavy weights were slightly easier. Choppers were in heavy supply, but the sale was again a keen one, with practically no change in values, which were;— Choppers, £3 13s 6d to £6 2s 6d. Light porkers. 41s 6d to 47s 6d. Medium porkers, 49s 6d to 57s 6d. Heavy porkers, 59s 6d to £3 6s 6d. Average price per lb, 7d to 7jd. Light baconers, £3 4s 6d to £3 14s 6d. Medium baconers, £3 19s 6d to £4 3s 6d. Heavy baconers, £4 7s 6d to £4 12s 6d. . Extra heavy baconers. £4 14s 6d to £5 9s 6d. I Average price, 6ijd to 7Jd. STORE PIGS The entry was the smallest for some time, barely 100 pigs being penned. The small entry was not reflected by keen competition, prices being only slightly better than those of last week. The few pens of weaners were of excellent quality for this time of the year, and met with quite a good sale. Values were:— Small weaners, 5s to 7s: best to 12s. Slips, 9s to 13s 6d. Small stores, 16s to 19s. Medium stores, 20s to 235. Large stores, 26s to 325. BURNSIDE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN. April 23. At the Burnside stock sale to-day there was a yarding of 352 fat cattle. Values were easier from the outset by 10s to 15s a head on all unfinished grades, while prime sorts maintained late levels. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £lB 17s 6d, prime £l4 to £l6 2s 6d, medium £lO 2s6d to £l2 2s 6d, light from £8; extra prime cows and heifers, to £l2 12s 6d, prime £8 12s 6d to £lO 7s 6d, medium and light from £4 7s 6d. Best three and four-year store steers made to £lO 10s. Only 1394 fat sheep were penned compared with 2876 at the previous sale. A keen sale resulted with values up by 2s to 2s 6d. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 355, prime 30s to 32s 9d, medium 22s to 245, light from 20s; extra prime heavy ewes, to 27s 3d, prime 20s 3d to 23s 6d, light frofn 11s. Fat lambs, of which 1624 were offered, sold keenly at prices firm on late rates. Extra prime lambs made to 35s 6d, prime 30s to 32s 6d, medium 23s to 25s 6d, light from 17s 6d. LORNEVILLE (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) INVERCARGILL, April 23. The entry of fat sheep at Lorneyille today was much smaller than at the pre-. vious sale, and comprised mainly ewes, most of which were of very good quality. The entry of fat wethers was disappointing. In keeping with the recent increase in the export schedule, freezing ewes were dearer, but butchers’ ewes were steady at last week’s rates.
