NEW BRIGHTON AFFAIRS

to- phe editor of the i pbess. Sir, —Will you kindly allow me space to discuss New Brighton municipal affairs. If I remember correctly, at the last election two years ago, a good many of the councillors talked a lot about amalgamation, which was said to be only a few months off. Two years have gone, and where is amalgamation? This is* our only hope, ior what, do we find with the present council: (a) No meeting for a month (Easter did not, interfere,..with the dates). (b) Councillor .does not attend,, as when he does ask any question referring to the good. and Interestof the borough he is censured by-.the council, (c) Councillor over 90 years of age. Cd) Deputy-Mayor and chairman of a committee resides in another borough. (e) Chairman of one of the most important, committees resides, I understand, in ■ Riccartori. (I. believe they both own a section in the borough to comply with the -law). (f) Chairman ,of another, important . committee applies for extended leave on account, of urgent private business. One councillor is serving his King and country—-a credit to him,' otherwise “some council.” The sanitary system is surely -- the dirtiest possible. The pans are never clean. -Why not adopt the system used in other'places—a clean tarred pan is replaced each week; not as we have it, a filthy pan. : The residents should wake up and find out what is holding up the long-promised amalgamation. We are always being told, by the

Mayor, it is just round the corner, to use an old expression,—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER® i April 15, 1940. [“My only comnjent in reply to the letter sent by ‘Ratepayer’ is that when the writer of this letter signs his name writes to nie direct he will receive an answer,” said the Mayor of New Brighton (Mr-E. L. Smith), to whom this letter was referred.]
