RUSSIAN BASES IN PACIFIC
UNITED STATES ARMY REPORTS NEW YORK, April 21. The Washington correspondent of the Associated Press of America states that it is understood that the United States army confirmed that Russia has established air and naval bases on the Siberian coast less than 100 miles from the American-owned Aleutian Islands. It is believed the Army High Command takes the attitude that the bases are designed primarily to combat a possible Japanese attack in Siberia, but it is unable to assume that the establishments would never be used against the United States. The reports revived the army request for an appropriation to con-
struct an air base at Anchorage, Alaska. ~, The Secretary for the Interior (Air Harold H.. Ick.es) is backing a campaign for legislation to colonise Alaska with Scandinavian and other refugees.
