X-RAY EXAMINATION OF RECRUITS

NEW PROCEDURE ADOPTED £THE PRESS Special Serviced AUCKLAND, April 22. A complete change in the system of making X-ray examinations of recruits for the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force has been made by the Army authorities. In future the men will receive this examination before being finally accepted for training. The procedure in the past has been to examine men after they have gone into camp, but the serious disadvantage of finding men unsuitable for active service overseas some time after they have actually begun training has resulted in the adoption of the new system. The change will take effect from tomorrow night, when the first men of the 3rd Echelon will be examined at the Auckland Hospital. By taking a batch of 120 men every night it is hoped to complete till the 3rd Echelon examinations by May 3. The same procedure will be adopted for all subsequent drafts of the Expeditionary Force. Every area will be responsible for the X-ray examination of its quota, the men being given an appointment for examination after going through the ordinary Medical Board examination. Their classification as fit by the board will be subject to a satisfactory test under the X-ray.
