CARTOONIST UPHELD

Objection by a correspondent to the Dunedin “Evening Star” to a cartoon by Minhinnick published after the expulsion of Mr J. A. Lee from the Labour Party drew a prompt reply by Mr Lee himself in defence of the cartoonist.* The cartoon, which was entitled “Turned Out Nice Again, Hasn’t It?” showed Mr Lee landing violently on his 'chin after being thrown through the window of the Labour Party Conference. The correspondent, Mr F. W. Orme, expressed the view that the paper “could have been decent and refrained from giving this matter such prominence. It is said in England tnat New Zealanders are more English than the English, but that is not the British way—to kick a man when he is down.. You have undoubtedly given him a. good kick.” To this. MT Lee replied as follows: —“I note a kind friend. Mr Orme, takes you to task for publishing a cartoon of • Minhinnick’s. ■ ;I- have written to thank him, but to tell him I do not mind. I think Minhinnick one of New Zealand’s bright lights;' long may he twinkle. The artist must not be muzzled. A lot of people would pay advertising rates to have the privilege of being pilloried by Minhinnick, whose cartoons I find a never-ending source of delight.”
